| Being afraid, nervous, anxious or even phobic of the dentist is something we are used to dealing with. |
| At St James Practice in East Grinstead you will be seen by our caring dental team and offered oral sedation where we feel this will help. Our relaxing attitude and chairside friendly manner will help to relax you and calm you ready for you to enjoy the best dental treatments possible. |

| For nervous patients we can highly recommend our CEREC ‘Crowns in an Hour’ system, this means less time at the practice and less needles… which always sounds good huh?
We also regularly write a dental practice blog, this often includes information about dealing with dental fear, phobia and anxiety. |

Why are you nervous or fearful of the dentist?
| This is the first place to start, ask yourself – was there an unpleasant experience in the past may be the cause of the anxiety? Common concerns include fear of injections, the anaesthetic not working, concerns about unnecessary treatment and anxiety about cross-infection. You can be completely re-assured that we will never start any treatment in our East Grinstead practice until you are totally comfortable and relaxed, we will also listen to your concerns and promise not to tell you off if you haven’t been to the dentist for a while. |
| Being nervous is a natural reaction, but you can overcome this with the right help from us. Unnecessary treatments are also something that you do not need to worry about at St James Dental Practice here in East Grinstead. We are a conservative practice that prefer to help you maintain your teeth rather than do lots of work to them (unless they need it of course!), you’ll also always be provided with a written plan of what we intend to do with all the costings listed. |

What can be done to overcome your fear of the dentist?
| Don’t be embarrassed about expressing your concerns and talking to us. If you feel you might be too anxious to call us, why not ask your question here, it’s simple, safe and we won’t share your details with anyone. |
| If you need treatment, ask plenty of questions and make sure you understand exactly what will happen, which should help you to feel more in control. You may also wish to bring a friend or relative with you for support. |
| If the thought of a long treatment session is concerning you, please mention this to us, we can then use a coping strategy, such as a hand signal if you need to take a break for a few moments. |
| The British Dental Health Foundation suggest calling to speak to the receptionist, and see what the atmosphere is like. Do the other people there look cheerful and happy? Does it give you a feeling of confidence. |
| We think this is great advice, this is why we’ve put photos of the practice on our website so you can see us before hand, take a look at them now and ask ‘how happy do we look?’ |

Prevention is best
| The best way to overcome fears is to come and see us regularly, the more you visit us, the better health your teeth will be in and the less treatment you will need. Most problems that people get concerned about are detected early, helping you steer clear of extensive treatment. Becoming a member of our practice is a great way to stay dentally healthy, membership to our Practice Plan means you get free checkups and dental hygiene appointments to keep your teeth in great condition meaning you need less treatment. |
| Also, make sure you look after your teeth properly. You should spend at least two minutes every morning and night on your brushing and flossing routine. |
| Watching what you eat can help reduce your risk of tooth decay, too. Some of the bacteria in our mouths love the sugars and starches found in foods. They turn these into acid, which causes decay. Limiting your intake of sugary and starchy foods helps to prevent tooth decay and the need for dental treatment. |
